Getting there:
We set out on Friday evening and stayed at a hotel in Rochester overnight. We usually stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites but they were full, so we went across the street to the Holiday Inn. It didn't compare to the quality of the Hampton Inn, and it was more expensive!
It rained so hard on our drive the next day that we missed out on a lot of beautiful hilly scenery. There were many flash flood warnings, and we encountered some difficult spots. There were two bridges we needed to go under that were very iffy. Traffic was slowed but made it through the first one:
But the second one had us fully stopped for over an hour. You can see that the water is actually as high as the divider! It finally stopped raining and after a bit the water level went down enough for us to get through. We waited until we saw a few cars lower than ours get through before we tried.
As we got into NYC, the GPS told us to turn right the wrong way onto a one-way street. We kept going straight instead, but then it ended up taking us right through Time Square on a Saturday evening!
We finally arrived in Brooklyn around 8pm. It was supposed to be 5.5 hours from the hotel and ended up taking us about 11 hours due to the weather. We were all completely exhausted. As we got close to Aaron's street, he found us a parking spot and stood in it until we got there, waving other cars away. We got our stuff unloaded and enjoyed a delicious dinner of Mexican food right across the street from their house.
I forgot to take photos of the room we slept in at Aaron's apartment. It was a beautiful room, brick walls and beautiful art and huge windows and an air conditioner. We brought camp mats and sleeping bags for the kids and they had a nice queen-sized air mattress for Clare and I with proper bedding. We were all very comfortable.
